Everyone remembers who wins Big Brother, but the first HouseGuest to be evicted, expelled or who quits the show each summer is always often forgotten almost immediately by the fans.
Let’s look at the first 13 Houseguests to hold this dubious honor and explain how they ended up being the first ones to leave CBS Studio Center in Studio City in the City of Angels in this show which started airing in the US in 2000.
Big Brother 1
The first American season of Big Brother was a lot different than the current incarnation of the show. Debuting on July 5, 2000, Big Brother 1 saw just 10 Houseguests enter the game with each contestant voting for two contestants to be “marked for banishment.” Instead of having fellow players ultimately vote someone out, viewers of the show did the dirty work and voted players out and also voted for the show’s winner.
Eddie McGee was voted as the winner of BB1, and the recipient of the $500,000 grand prize, while the first Houseguest to ever leave the house first was Will “Mega” Collins, a 27-year-old politician from Philadelphia who received 73% of the public’s vote and was banished on Day 17.
Big Brother 2
On Big Brother 2, everyone remembers that it was Will Kirby (Dr. Will) who won the season, which evolved into the game we know today with contestants nominating and then voting to evict their fellow Houseguests. But does anyone remember who left the house first and why?
It was a strange reality even for reality TV when viewers saw 26-year-old Justin Sebik playfully hold a knife up to the neck of Krista Stegall with producers and the show’s psychologist having seen enough of his rule-breaking to expel the investment operations associate from Bayonne, New Jersey on Day 10.
The show went on with its scheduled eviction two days later when 43-year-old Sheryl Braxton, an interior designer from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida was voted out on Day 12 by a 5-3 vote.
Big Brother 3
On Big Brother 3, we saw the first season with two women in the Final 2 as Lisa Donahue defeated Danielle Reyes in the Final 2 back in 2002 in the then one story house that had four bedrooms. Daniele will be one of two former Big Brother alums playing in Traitors 3 this winter on Peacock.
The first player voted out on BB3—which had 12 houseguests— was 39-year-old bank representative Lori Olson from Superior, Wisconsin who was evicted on Day 13 by a narrow 5-4 vote, making her the first female to leave the BB house first in America.
Big Brother 4
On Big Brother 4, we witnessed yet another all-female Final 2—where Jun Song topped Alison Irwin—but we also saw another houseguest get bounced for bad behavior. Chicago waiter Scott Weintraub actually left the BB house after seeing his ex Amanda Craig enter the game as part of the X-Factor twist and was not allowed to return.
After being expelled on Day 8, Scott’s former girlfriend, 27-year-old Chicago bar manager Amanda was unanimously voted out (9-0) on Day 12.
Big Brother 5
Drew Daniel was the winner of Big Brother 5, in a season that saw 14 Houseguests enter the game, and yet again, it was a man who ended up being the first to leave when 41-year-old Eastpointe, Michigan painter Mike Lubinski was unanimously voted out by a 10-0 vote on Day 14.
Big Brother 6
On Big Brother 6, it was Maggie Ausburn who lasted all 80 days to become the third women’s winner in four seasons in another season with 14 people in the house built on a parking lot in Studio City.
Day 12 saw 22-year-old Ashlea Evans become the first Houseguest evicted as the fashion design student from Plantation, Florida was voted out by her housemates, 9-2.
Big Brother 7
Also known as Big Brother All-Stars, Big Brother 7 was a very fun watch and saw Mike “Boogie” Malin return with his Chilltown alliance member Dr. Will, and win the show and the $500,000, defeating Erika Landin in finale night.
The first evictee on BB7? Season 4 runner-up and Meadville, Pennsylvania product Alison Irwin, who was evicted on Day 11 by an overwhelming 8-2 vote.
There were 20 candidates to play in the first BB All-Stars, with six players not chosen by the public: Monica Bailey (BB2), Ivette Cordero (BB6), Lisa Donahue (BB3), Michael “Cowboy” Ellis (BB5), Bill “Bunky” Miller (BB2), and Dana Varela (BB4).
Big Brother 8
Another woman was the first evicted on Big Brother 8, making it three straight seasons, with 21-year-old college student from Lawrence, Kansas, Carol Journey being voted out 10-1. We saw the oldest winner of the show in that top-notch season when 44-year-old “Evel Dick” Donato defeated his daughter to win the bacon.
Carol lasted 13 days while Dick and Daniele Donato lasted all 81 days in another season that saw 14 houseguests enter the Alice in Wonderland-themed house.
Big Brother 9
On Big Brother 9, it was a man who was quickly evicted when 23-year-old electrician Jacob Heald from Dallas, Georgia was evicted by a 3-1 vote on Day 3—the earliest eviction to date at that time—in the Power Couple twist themed ‘Til Death Do You Part season which also saw Neil Garcia quitting on Day 7.
Although two men were the first to leave, there were also two men in the Final 2 where 29-year-old Adam Jasinski beat out ally member Ryan Quicksall in a season that saw the number of Houseguests increase from 14 to 16. And a man, James Zinkand, also won America’s Favorite Juror in the 81-day season.
Big Brother 10
There were only 13 Houseguests on Big Brother 10, which saw Dan Gheesling beat ally Memphis Garrett in the finale in the second-lowest rated season of the CBS show to that date (average 6.72 million viewers per episode).
A 27-year-old telecommunications manager from San Francisco named Brian Hart was the first player evicted when he left the house on Day 9 in a solid 9-1 vote.
Big Brother 11
Braden Bacha made it three straight men to leave first when the 28-year-old surfer from Santa Monica, California was evicted on Day 12 in Big Brother 11 in another 13-player season. Braden lost by a 6-5 vote against Chima Simone in the 73-day season.
Jordan Lloyd beat Natalie Martinez in yet another all women Final 2 with Jordan’s partner Jeff Schroeder taking home America’s Favorite Houseguest.
Big Brother 12
Hayden Moss was the winner on Big Brother 12, another season with 13 players which lasted 75 days and saw another Traitors 3 player from Big Brother, Britney Haynes nab America’s Favorite Houseguest.
The men’s three-season streak of being the first evictee ended on BB12 when 27-year-old Tampa, Florida bartender Annie Whittington was evicted on Day 13 by a unanimous 10-0 vote over Rachel Reilly who would win her $500,000 a season later.
Big Brother 13
After almost being the first Houseguest out on BB12, Rachel Reilly returned for Big Brother 13 and left her mark on the game after having one of the strongest games ever by a female contestant and winning over Porsche Briggs in another all-women Final 2.
Who was the first out in 2011? None other than “Evel Dick” Donato, who was forced to quit on Day 6 when he received the news his blood test showed he was HIV-positive. So Dick is the only player who can say he was the first and the last to leave as well as the oldest winner and only Houseguest to face a family member in the Final 2.
The first evicted that 14-player season was 32-year-old Bolingbrook, Illinois human resources manager Keith Henderson, who was bounced by a 6-4 vote against eventual runner-up Porsche. Both Keith and Porsche are frequent analysts on Evel Dick’s BB podcast Dick At Nite.
Overview
In the first 13 seasons of Big Brother, a trend that would continue through the seasons developed with eight of the first contestants leaving being men. And three of these first 13 to leave the game weren’t actually evicted with Justin (BB2) and Scott (BB4) being expelled and Evel Dick (BB13) being forced to quit for medical reasons.
