Big Brother: How COVID-19 can affect the upcoming season
COVID-19 has the potential to impact Big Brother 22 because of the game’s nature of close interaction, saddening loyal fans across the US.
As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on with a vengeance and social distancing practices remain in place, it is fair to wonder how Big Brother season 22 will or could be affected.
Big Brother is a reality show that encloses people in a house with each other – is that smart? It would not be the least bit surprising to see the season canceled or postponed into the fall. America has not experienced a pandemic to this extent in its modern history and we will likely see many dramatic changes when it dies down.
At this point in time, CBS likely has an idea of who will be on the show already and because of that, there is hope. All contestants can easily and will easily be vetted and tested for the coronavirus prior to entering the house. The last thing CBS, the competing houseguests, and viewers want to have happen is a coronavirus spread within the Big Brother house.
Other nations’ installments of Big Brother, namely in Germany, Brazil, and Canada, have already experienced an impacted season. Producers of the show have long adhered to the rule that they will only tell houseguests of outside information if it impacts their family via death or illness. The last time something of this nature happened and was forced to be explained to houseguests was during Season 2 when the 9/11 attacks occurred.
Season 8 of Big Brother Canada production has already been ceased due to the coronavirus. This is a huge development that has dramatic implications on the hopes of a normal Big Brother season.
Many prospective contestants will likely have their reservations about entering the house when the time comes – understandably so. It takes a very strong-willed person to be able to leave their family behind for months at a time in a normal season, but it takes an even stronger person to enter the house with a raging pandemic in play.
We can only hope as fans that the season will continue or at worst, be postponed. However, we must acknowledge that this pandemic is bigger than Big Brother.

Super-fans, former players, and the new viewers of the show will not be able to come together like has normally taken place in past years, which hurts. Big Brother 22 will likely be postponed — at the minimum. A full cancellation is still on the table with the season set to start in late June and the coronavirus poised to continue running its course.
