Over the years, Big Brother has seen plenty of shocking moments. With the show over until next summer, we thought we would talk about the 3 most shocking moments in Big Brother history.

Big Brother has been on the air for 19 years and 24 seasons (if you include Big Brother: Over the Top and the 2 seasons of Celebrity Big Brother). Being on the air that long, naturally you are going to have some very shocking moments. With this in mind, we decided to take a look at the 3 most shocking moments of all-time.

No. 3: Michael “Cowboy” Ellis and Jennifer “Nakomis” Dedmon find out they’re related

On Big Brother 5, the theme of the season was project DNA (Do Not Assume). As part of this twist, Adria and Natalie Klein, who were identical twins, played the game together. For the first several weeks, Adria and Natalie would swap out who was in the house each week, playing as Adria. After 4 weeks, Natalie entered the house an official houseguest and the other houseguests learned of the Twin Twist, shocking everyone. However, that was not the most surprising twist of the summer.

Michael “Cowboy” Ellis and Jennifer “Nakomis” Dedmon were actually brother and sister. They just didn’t know it yet.  Michael had never met his father before. After getting to know Nakomis, Michael started investigating because he suspected something was off, asking Nakomis about her father. After they talked about each other and Nakomis’ father, the two discovered they were brother and sister. Upon revealing this information to their fellow houseguests, Nakomis and Michael were called to the diary room, where they received letters from their father. The letters confirmed that they were, in fact, brother and sister.

Michael finished in 2nd place to Drew Daniel in a 4-3 vote. He garnered votes from Nakomis, Adria, and Natalie. Nakomis finished the season in 4th place after she was evicted by Michael.

No. 2: Marcellas Reynolds doesn’t use the Power of Veto on himself at final 5, gets evicted

Big Brother 3 introduced the concept of the Power of Veto. This allowed the Veto’s holder to remove one nominee from the chopping block and be immune from being the replacement nominee. However, for most of Season 3, it was only the Silver Power of Veto, so you could only use the Power of Veto on somebody else.

At the final 5, the Power of Veto was upgraded to the Golden Power of Veto. The Golden Power of Veto allowed its holder to remove themselves from the chopping block if they chose to do so.

At the final 5, HOH Jason Guy nominated Marcellas Reynolds against Amy O’Hara for eviction. Marcellas then won the Golden Power of Veto. At the Power of Veto meeting, Marcellas ultimately refused to use the Power of Veto as his friend Amy Crews was also nominated for eviction.

At the live eviction, the came back a 1-1 tie. Lisa Donahue had voted to evict Amy while Danielle Reyes had voted toevict Marcellas. Jason broke the tie and chose to evict Marcellas. Upon greeting him for his exit interview, host Julie Chen-Moonves slapped Marcellas upside the head for making such a boneheaded move. To date, Marcellas’ blunder is considered one of the worst moves in Big Brother history.

No. 1: Dan’s funeral

Lets set the stage to understand just how shocking this move was. Frank Eudy had just lost his 2 closest allies, Ashley Iocco and Mike “Boogie” Malin to a double eviction. However, he rebounded by winning HOH. While HOH, he chose to unleash Pandora’s Box. Frank received $3,000 but unleashed the Golden Ball of Veto into the game, meaning there would be 2 Vetos that week.

Ian Terry won the Golden Ball of Veto making him immune from eviction. Frank chose to nominate Dan Gheesling (his biggest adversary) and Dan’s closest ally, Danielle Murphree.

Once the POV players had been selected, the plan was for the Quack Pack to throw the POV Competition to either Britney Haynes or Shane Meaney. Ian and whichever of Britney and Shane won the POV would use the Vetos to remove Dan and Danielle from the chopping block. The Quack Pack would then have the numbers to control the eviction and send either Jenn Arroyo or Joe Arvin home.

The main obstacle to this plan succeeding was that Frank and Jenn were competing in the POV and Frank had proven to be a beast in competitions. During the POV Competition, Dan threw a wrench into his alliance’s plan by attempting to win the POV for himself. Frank took numerous punishments along the way but ultimately was disqualified when he was clearly seen trying to feed an answer to Britney. The rules clearly stated you weren’t allowed to help anyone else in the competition.

This meant Dan was now in the lead with 13 points, Britney was in 2nd with 6, and Jenn was in 3rd with 4. The re-do of the final question was worth 11 points, like the initial final question. Jenn got the question correct and won the Power of Veto. Meanwhile, Dan was off to solitary confinement as he had taken that punishment to earn points in the competition.

While Dan was in solitary, the rest of the house was ready to evict him. However, Dan had one last trick up his sleeve. This lead to the most shocking moment in Big Brother history.

Dan’s scheme came to him when he was enduring his solitary confinement. Upon his release from solitary, he acted like he was sick in order to gain sympathy and the ability to avoid talking to everyone, which worked. Then, Dan gathered everyone in the living room. He dressed in all black and welcomed everyone to his Big Brother funeral.

Dan started off his Big Brother funeral complimenting everyone, which moved them to tears. Then, he got to Frank and told Frank he wanted to talk privately in the HOH room. Then, he accused Danielle of betraying him and disowned her after Danielle stole points from him in the POV Competition.

Later, Dan went upstairs to talk to Frank like he had wanted. In the HOH room, Dan exposed Ian as a mole and sold out the rest of his Quack Pack. Upset upon hearing this information, Frank wanted Ian evicted. However, Ian was immune and nothing could be done this week. So, Dan came up with an alternative plan of evicting Britney, who was Ian’s closest ally. Dan swore on the Bible, his wedding ring, and dead grandfather’s cross necklace to seal the move.

Then, Dan was able to convince Danielle that when he trashed her at his funeral it had all been a ruse (which it wasn’t) and got her on board with the plan. Then, up in the HOH room, Frank talked with Jenn about using the POV on Dan.

At the POV ceremony, Jenn used the POV on Dan, shocking everyone. Then, Frank chose to nominate Britney in Dan’s place, causing everyone’s jaws to drop on the floor (so to speak). At the live eviction, Britney was evicted in a 4-1 vote. The lone vote to keep Britney came from Ian.

Dan would finish the season in 2nd place, losing to Ian in a 6-1 vote. Dan’s lone vote to win came from Danielle.
